Where can I find and download for free maps of the world?

I'm looking for maps of South America and I want them to have details about roads,lakes etc.Do you have any idea where to download them for free?Thx in advance...

1. Have you tried Google Earth and Google Maps. They're great and you can always do a print screen once you've got the image you want.
