How do I choose a world map that will work for a family?
We want to put a world map on the wall in our den so we can refer to it when questions come up and to further engage our kids in learning about the world. Our kids are 6 and 9 so we want one without excessive detail that would confuse them, but it should also be a true resource - not just something to use until we turn on the computer. I went to Maps.com and was overwhelmed by the choices. How do I choose? Thanks in advance.

- It depends what you think you will use the map for. When I bought one for my family, we decided our major interest was in being able to find each country, rather than geographical features or cities or sub-divisions within the countries (states and counties). Of course, some countries do come and go, but not as often as they used to, so there is a risk of your map becoming outdated pretty quickly. We opted for something large, cheap, cheerful and country based. I had it laminated and we drew in any changes with a permanent marker. I toyed with buying a new map after certain parts of the world started to look a bit messy, but the family wouldn't have it! Fortunately our writing is getting smaller and neater (and we tidied up some of the older stuff with methylated spirits, cotton buds and finer markers) Have fun with your map!
