How do magnetic floating globes work?

I have always been curious how they can use magnets for this. it seems like magnets would make this very difficult, seeing as their force grows exponentially with distance. diagrams are requested.

1. Well, actually, force decreases (inverse square) with distance. So as two magnets with the same orientation (north to north, south to south) come closer and closer to each other, the repulsion gets stronger and stronger. The opposite is true if they have opposite orientation (south to north) - as they get closer, the magnetic field gets stronger.
