Do plasma globes work after you take the globe part off?

I know that it wouldn't look as cool without the noble gases; but would it work like a regular tesla coil.

1. It's actually a near-vacuum with a little gas in it. It won't work in open air, and naturally it's dangerous to have the high voltage exposed.
