- It cuts into the most important thing...profit margin. Show globes were part of a different era. They told everybody passing by that the store was a pharmacy. These were the days of private small businesses. There were no chains, or affiliates. There were no combination food & drug stores. The drug store was run by a chemist. Everything cost $$ so that has been on the "cut" list for about the last 50 years. If it breaks or gets a damaged top, it would cost $$ to replace. Today, a corporate logo has replaced it and the "drug" part of it has more to do with OTC drugs rather than prescriptions. Now you can get an assortment of non drug items at the same place from appliances, magazines, food, liquor in some, brooms, cameras, charcoal, plants and cosmetics to lawn chairs. The only empty space in today's drug stores is the aisles, and they usually have a worker and cart blocking the way while s/he marks up the prices and replaces products form the "new" version to the "All New" smaller size...at the same cost. There's no room for the show globe. Space is taken up by things on sale. Unless the storeroom had some more on the shelf, the show globes weren't for sale. Therefore they didn't produce a profit. Another reason is that today more people are literate. The show globe was displayed so that all passing by would know that a pharmacy was inside...you didn't have to know how to read to find a drug store...especially for out-of-towners, unfamiliar with the town. I know of 2 places with one. They have both been in business for decades.
