Why is the African continent located in the middle of the great majority of World Maps?

Bonus question: If you had the power to remove that map (physically and from the memories of those who've seen it) and replace it with one centred around a location of your choosing, where would you centre it?

1. Because both the Prime Meridian and Equator run through it, People like to put those lines in the middle of world maps you can get maps where Africa is off to the side
