Wholesale Globes

Why do some people argue that the new light globes are not any more energy efficient than the others?

I would like to know why some people think that the new globes are not any more energy efficient than the older globes? (light bulbs)

  1. Because they still consume the same amount of electricity... the 60w, 40w, 80w, 120w, 90w, ratings they have are not how bright they are... its how much electricity they consume... Thats why they're not any more efficient. However, CFL's (compact florescent) are much more efficient and consume about 80% less power then their luminescent counterparts.
  2. Because ppl assume they use less power they tend less likely to turn them of as with the old ones and residual heat is non existent(which in the old was fairly significant over a period of being left on) you still need that extra 1degree on your central heating thermostat
  3. I personally don't think they save any energy. I changed all the old bulbs to the "green" ones when I moved into my rental home 3 years ago. I rarely have the lights on at night, I just have 1 "green bulb" on and the TV or computer. Yet my electric bill every month is $150-250 every month! No savings there! What a crock!
  4. They are not called "globes". They are light bulbs. Crazy foreigner. Anyways, CFL bulbs (the new kind of bulb) are very energy efficient. They produce the same amount of light for about 1/8th of the energy that an incandescent bulb does and last just as long. However, if the bulb is turned on and off frequently (under 15 minute intervals), it can reduce the lifetime of the bulb by 80%. This means you have to replace a bulb every 2 years at least if it is a commonly switched bulb (say the bathroom). Therefore, the production of these bulbs will be more than the production of incandescent bulbs. Misinformation is also a big factor in the incandescent vs. CFL debate. Many people believe that since CFLs contain mercury, they are bad. It isn't as well known that incandescent bulbs contain mercury. Also, the long bulbs in the ceiling of your school or workplace are the same technology as CFLs, just bigger. So this mercury thing caused illogical fear. This fear turned into hatred of the bulbs, which translated into trying to get people to not use CFLs in any way, including spreading misinformation about their efficiency. HOWEVER, there are many people who don't like these new CFLs and talk bad about them because they are politically motivated. Al Gore was one of the first big proponents of leaving incandescent bulbs. Since many conservatives hate Al Gore, there was a backlash against this new technology because it was made into a partisan issue. See: Glenn Beck.
